Description
Brightening the Inner Body: teachings and practices for developing and integrating the energetic and psychological domains within us.
This course is for Yin teachers who want to use the Yin yoga class as a doorway for developing the subtle body, Mindfulness practice and psychological inquiry.
Attendance in the entire program is required. In order to be eligible to receive the Certificate of Completion for this course, you must attend all of the hours of the training, and complete the required assigned essay. Please plan your time and travel accordingly in order to not miss any of the sessions.
Yin yoga encourages holding floor poses for long periods to enhance the Chi or energy distribution through the fascia, organs, and bones. Restoring the flow of Chi within us has a direct impact on our psychological states, encouraging increased ease of being, a foundation for authentic meditation to occur. After we have established a clear understanding of how and why to practice Yin yoga, we can begin to look more closely at the pranic and mind training aspect available to us while in the poses, and as a separate seated practice.
In this course, we will NOT focus on how and why to practice Yin Yoga (assuming you already know these things), INSTEAD we will explore the inner methods; various breath patterns and retentions, visualizations for the health of the organs, contemplations in the poses, as well as the foundation methods of Buddhist Mindfulness.
Each session will include a lecture, yin yoga session, seated meditation practices focusing on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, as well as interactive discussion time. Included will be handouts and suggestions for reading.
Study and Reading
Acquiring an intellectual understanding of the rich diversity of Yoga and Buddhism inspires one's dedication to the path of awakening; it also fosters a clear level of communication and discussion with others.
Students will be provided a reading list prior to the start of the training and are required to read the books assigned for this training before they arrive. Readings from these books are an integral part of the training so please order the materials upon receipt of the reading list so you have ample time to read them before the training begins.
Outside reading prior to and during the course will be required to enrich one's overall understanding.
A training manual will be handed out on the first day of class.
To be eligible to receive the certificate, you will also be asked to write a 1-2 page essay on the themes offered in this training upon completion of the course for assessment.

Sarah Powers began teaching in 1987. She is the founder and author of Insight Yoga, which interweaves the insights and practices of Yoga, Buddhism, Taoism, and Transpersonal Psychology into an integral practice to discover and enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of floor poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems, combined with an alignment-based slow flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga, Ashtanga, Iyengar teachings, and QIgong. Sarah feels that enlivening the physical and pranic bodies, as well as learning to open to our psychological patterns is paramount for preparing one to deepen and nourish insights into one's essential nature--a natural state of awareness. She draws from her studies in Transpersonal Psychology, as well as her in-depth training in the Vipassana, Tantric and Dzogchen practices of Buddhism. Her main influences are Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Jennifer Welwood, Lama Tsultrim Allione, and Lama Pema Dorje.
