Yogi of June - Sophie Wang
In a blink of an eye, two years has passed since I started taking classes at SPACE. I originally came to SPACE because of Ethan, who began to teach here after he left the gym where I used to take his classes. I didn’t realize at the time that it will take me deep into this multi-faceted world of yoga.

I have always liked working out, but I never encountered an exercise like yoga before. It not only works on the muscles of your whole body, it also works on your balance and flexibility and furthermore, it focuses on the development of your mind and spirit. And because of all these benefits, yoga easily and completely became a part of my life.

For example, it was not until recently that I realized I am bow legged. I have always worn out the outer edge of my heels. That may not be that big of a deal to others. Most people just live with it for the rest of their lives. But fortunately that is not the case for me. Through my yoga practice, I learned to change my condition. After asking Shirlyn and Kelly for their advice and practice engaging my inner legs as what many other teachers have taught me to do, I was surprised to discover that my legs became straighter. Additionally, I kept practicing poses such as mountain pose, wheel and other back bends. The curvature of my legs has clearly improved. I was so happy about it that it felt like after all these years of being alive I finally received the correct owner’s manual on how to use my body.

There are other problems with my body, such as chronic pain caused by my tight shoulders and neck. I tried to follow the instructions of many of the teachers by relaxing my shoulders, watching my alignment and strengthening my shoulders and back muscles. I also tried to integrate the principles about biomechanics and muscle structure I have learned from Sybil’s integrated therapy lecture, along with emotional adjustment in my practice…there are just too many things to learn.

Practicing yoga also led me to adjust my eating habits by being particularly mindful to what I eat and caring more about how food affected my body. I discovered there are many people like me at SPACE who feel that the learning on this topic seems to be endless. Once I started practicing yoga, my family life also improved. Not only do my kids eat more healthy and balanced now, my communication with them also became better. I used to complain about how my kids did not listen well and I always had to nag them. But now I realized that I am like a child also, always needing the teachers to repeat again and again for a long time before I start hearing what they were saying. And even though I may have heard it, but I couldn’t really understand it all or be able to do it all.

I often take Kelly, Shirlyn, Chi, Jay, Sharon, and Felina’s classes and I always learn a lot from them in each class. I’m very grateful to all of them. They really know how to draw the students’ attention. I will try hard to come to class consistently and continue to happily explore this world in order to better myself, my life and others around me.
