When I first attended Peter's immersion back in 2012, I didn't know what Iyengar Yoga was. I came to class with the attitude of taking a pilgrimage to study with a master. I was very shocked to see how Peter was able to spot the pains and strains in my practice amongst the numerous attendees and provided me with proper adjustment and guidance. It was this feeling of being cared for and attended to that I continued to study with him through three more immersions and eventually signed up for the three-year long TTC.

During these three years, the daily practices Peter given us not only helped me developed the habit of a personal practice, these sequences also taught us experientially the wisdom of proper sequencing. It wasn't he came twice a year then he was gone. There were monthly written and Asana photo assignments, through which he was able to follow our practice and progress. They also reflected his thoughtfulness and diligence towards teaching.

One of the things I got the most out of Peter's training is the art of observation. Often in the midst of practice, Peter would want us to quickly come and look at someone's pose. Sometimes it was done well, but most often than not – it was done incorrectly! But, he never ridiculed or reproached when he corrected a student. He would teach us to observe sometimes from a distance to get an overall external view and sometimes in close up to see the direction of the muscle or the position of the joints. In this way, both the student being corrected and ones observing all benefited from the experience. We also learned how to exam the student in more detail to discover the cause of their problems and to provide correct adjustments and instructions.

Under Peter's guidance, my practice has steadily progressed. My biggest gains were the accumulated leg injury from years of dance teaching has slowly healed and my yoga teaching now has a firm direction. An ending is also a new beginning. I'm looking forward to Peter's 2017 Junior Intermediate training! It is a wonderful opportunity for us to systematically continue with our learning of Iyengar Yoga.

Peter Scott has been practicing yoga since 1977 and has devoted almost 40 years to the art and science of yoga. He is a Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher based in Melbourne, Australia at Yoga Jivana (Yoga Life) Centre, which he runs in partnership. He began teaching in 1982 and currently runs Teacher Training Courses and Workshops in Australia and Overseas.

Peter’s classes, workshops and trainings are a culmination of his years of dedicated practice and teaching. He is much loved by students in Australia and overseas for his ability to inspire and guide the practitioner along the path of yoga, and for the clarity he creates when teaching. Peter’s instructions and his approach to teaching leads the student into that penetration of awareness to where body, senses, organs of action, mind and intellect work together to give lightness of body and calmness of mind during the asana practice. Through his long-term practice of yoga combined with his original study of Naturopathy and Remedial Massage (Grad. SSNT 1985), Peter has extensive knowledge of the body, its functions and how that relates to yogic wisdom.

A teacher trainer in Iyengar Yoga since 1990, Peter has specifically developed this approach for Teacher Training in Iyengar Yoga from his years of experience, to provide a clear and effective method of learning the art and science of yoga teaching and help yoga students’ progress seamlessly from being in the class to standing in front and teaching the class.

Taking the Next Step, Enhancing Life-long Learning

This Teacher Training Course is designed to help teachers further their development in the teaching and practice of Iyengar Yoga. It includes an increasingly deeper study of asana, pranayama, darshan and teaching via the Junior Intermediate Level I Syllabus. It offers both practical and experiential learning as well as theory, and also includes preparations for higher levels of Iyengar teacher qualification. Guruji BKS Iyengar states that “Yoga Practice needs will power and discriminative power” and the Junior Intermediate TTC will build that discriminative power.

Suitable for:

  • Certified Introductory Iyengar Teachers*
  • Teachers or practitioners who have completed Introductory Iyengar Teacher Training Course*
  • Teachers or practitioners who have significant Iyengar Experience**.

*Those who did not complete a TTC with Peter or have studied at least 50 hours with Peter or Sue Scott are strongly encouraged to take the 50-hour Teacher's immersion course prior to the start of this course to familiarize themselves with higher level Iyengar instructions and principles.
** Must have studied with Peter or Sue Scott. Applicant's eligibility will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Asana and Pranayama:

  • Junior Intermediate Level I Syllabus
  • Clarify the basic principles of Iyengar Yoga
  • Individual Asanas -Detailed approach and breakdown
  • Asana Groups - Asana will work via asana groupings focus
  • Pranayama – Study / Practice / Teaching
  • Led Asana Practice / Other Advanced Asanas

Art of Teaching:

  • Clarify the teaching of Iyengar Yoga
  • Develop the principles behind the teaching of higher levels of Iyengar Yoga
  • Teaching guidance including adjustments and prop usage
  • Forster clarity in demonstrations and in instructions.
  • Advance such as teaching presence and class control
  • Cultivate keener insight to student alignment and thus improve the ability to correct
  • Distinguish teaching for different levels of students for progressive understanding.

Iyengar Yoga Practice and Assignments

The required ongoing practice and study between the contact terms:

  1. Individual practice: daily practice sequence will be given for each day of the week. Trainees will be required to keep a practice log.
  2. Group practice: there will be a group practice once a week, where one trainee will be leading the practice.
  3. Written assignments: there will be some regular assignments that are related to the given daily practice.
  4. Photo assignments: Monthly asana photo assignments. Feedback and suggestions will be provided.
