Years ago, Paula went all the way to India to take her first yoga class. Many studious practitioners who haven’t had a chance to take that pilgrimage would have been envious of her. However, the motivation was this journey was actually for her health; she was told by her doctor that if her scoliosis got any worse that she may have to consider surgery. Under her doctor’s recommendation, she swam and went to physical therapy, but none of them did much to improve her condition. Finally, she had to go with plan B – yoga.

Following her intuition, she travelled to India, taking various classes. She ended up staying in the northern city of Dharamshala for a month. There she studied with Vijay, an Ashtanga Yoga Master, and Sharat, a Himalayan Iyengar Master. Later, she returned to India to train with Venkatesha in a 5-month long program at the Atmavikasa Centre of Yogic Sciences in Mysore. On and off, she had spent a whole year in India, often in three-hour long classes, practicing pranayama, meditation, chanting and asana. Through these intense practices, she felt as if she was reborn with a deep inner connection.

From the disciplined teachings of these masters, Paula came to understand the importance of the practice. She also learned to surrender. Most importantly, from observing their daily lives, she realized that “joy” is gained from consistent practice, purified body and healthy life. That is why after she completed her 200-hour Yoga Alliance registered teacher training with Patrick Creelman, she poured all that she have learned into her teaching, hoping to help others clear up their bewilderment, to reconnect with their mind and body and to bring more positive energy to others.

In the Iyengar classes she took in northern India, it took at least half of an hour to prepare all the props, Paula learned to be thorough and exact. She realized how important this conscientiousness is in keeping one’s body safe. In her close to a decade long practice, she is always mindful of her posture when practicing. And that condition which led her onto the path of yoga, the scoliosis, no longer troubles her any more. She is also able to help other students with similar problems.

Whether you have been injured, are unfamiliar with yoga, looking for stress relief or life transformation, you can come to Paula’s class to experience her warm teaching and nurturing.

“Yoga is a way of life that is worth taking a whole life to learn.”

~Paula
