The Radiant Ground: Awakening Subtle Alignment and Smooth Flow

This weekend is a step-by-step exploration of the basic thread of form, breathing, and movement upon which the classical series of postures in the Ashtanga Vinyasa system is strung. We will explore effective and natural patterns of alignment that open core breathing patterns and integrated movements. Using a rich context of form, pranayama, and meditative insight, this workshop will allow participants to bring a new degree of freedom, technical skill and compassion to their every day practice and life.

Open to students of all levels who have at least 6 months asana practice and who wish to deepen their skill and understanding so that their practice can move to the next level and yoga can become more fully supportive of and integrated into their daily life.

Secrets of Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga means so much more than whether or not you can put your leg behind your head or catch your heels in backbending, though those can be fun and tangible landmarks within our asana practice. But there’s always so much more to a balanced practice! The healthiest approach to yoga is to incorporate and integrate into our practice all eight limbs of the traditional Ashtanga system as described in the Yoga Sutra. It is through this integrated approach that meditation, freedom, and lasting happiness spontaneously arise.

Mornings will be asana classes in which we explore details of the traditional series, finding power in the transitions and new alignment depth in old poses. We will bring the brilliant core of the central axis out through the forms of the postures, turning them into mudras of feeling and expression so that our practice is ever deepening, steady and safe, a source for inspiration.

In the afternoons we will practice chanting, meditation and pranayama as well as dive into the philosophy of the Yoga Sutra as it reveals the secrets of complete awakening to the world of interdependence between people, cultures and deep contemplative experience.

Open to students of all levels who have at least 6 months asana practice and who wish to deepen their skill and understanding so that their practice can move to the next level and yoga can become more fully supportive of and integrated into their daily life.

Richard Freeman

Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968. He has spent nearly nine years in Asia studying various traditions which he incorporates into the Ashtanga yoga practice as taught by his principal teacher, Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. Richard’s background includes studying Sufism in Iran, Zen and Vipassana Buddhist practice, Bhakti and traditional Hatha yoga in India. Starting in 1974 he also began an in-depth study of Iyengar yoga, which eventually led him to Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Richard is an avid student of both Western and Eastern philosophy, as well as Sanskrit. His ability to juxtapose various viewpoints, without losing the depth and integrity of each, has helped him develop a unique, metaphorical teaching style. Richard is the founder of the Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado which is his teaching home base. He has numerous practice DVD’s and CD’s, is the author of The Mirror of Yoga(2010) and travels throughout the world teaching courses, workshops and trainings.

Mary Taylor

Mary Taylor began studying yoga in 1972, but it was not until 1988 and finding her primary teacher, Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois, and the Ashtanga Vinyasa system that she felt the profound and transformative impact that a dedicated and daily practice can have. She continues to study and practice yoga and Buddhist teachings with great enthusiasm and inquisitiveness, with an eye on how the residue that is produced on the mat (and cushion) through these teachings informs and supports all aspects of everyday life. She cofounded with Richard the Yoga Workshop and is the author of What Are You Hungry for? Women, Food and Spirituality, New Vegetarian Classics: Soups and New Vegetarian Classics: Entrees.

Richard and Mary’s new writing on Ashtanga Yoga, the Art of Vinyasa has been published in winter 2016.
