Richard Freeman

Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968. He has spent nearly nine years in Asia studying various traditions which he incorporates into the Ashtanga yoga practice as taught by his principal teacher, Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. Richard’s background includes studying Sufism in Iran, Zen and Vipassana Buddhist practice, Bhakti and traditional Hatha yoga in India. Starting in 1974 he also began an in-depth study of Iyengar yoga, which eventually led him to Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Richard is an avid student of both Western and Eastern philosophy, as well as Sanskrit. His ability to juxtapose various viewpoints, without losing the depth and integrity of each, has helped him develop a unique, metaphorical teaching style. Richard is the founder of the Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado which is his teaching home base. He has numerous practice DVD’s and CD’s, is the author of The Mirror of Yoga(2010) and travels throughout the world teaching courses, workshops and trainings.

Mary Taylor

Mary Taylor began studying yoga in 1972, but it was not until 1988 and finding her primary teacher, Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois, and the Ashtanga Vinyasa system that she felt the profound and transformative impact that a dedicated and daily practice can have. She continues to study and practice yoga and Buddhist teachings with great enthusiasm and inquisitiveness, with an eye on how the residue that is produced on the mat (and cushion) through these teachings informs and supports all aspects of everyday life. She cofounded with Richard the Yoga Workshop and is the author of What Are You Hungry for? Women, Food and Spirituality, New Vegetarian Classics: Soups and New Vegetarian Classics: Entrees.

Richard and Mary’s new writing on Ashtanga Yoga, the Art of Vinyasa has been published in winter 2016.

* All Levels

As one of the first Western teachers to be certified to teach the Ashtanga method by K. Pattabhi Jois, Richard is world-renowned for his uniquely insightful presentation of Ashtanga yoga in its most vital, philosophical, and meditative form. Together with his wife, Mary, the depth and richness of their close to a century of combined yoga experience is beyond compare.

This is a perfect opportunity for students who are relatively new to yoga to learn from the masters right off the bat and allow the seeds of profound philosophy and practice that may be challenging to grasp begin to germinate and eventually blossom. For yoga teachers or experienced practitioners, this is a wonderful chance to gain an even greater understanding of the subtleties of yoga.

Course Description

When we practice without proper context or guidance, it may sometimes feel singularly about one’s own “self” or ego, and forget Yoga is Relationship; interplay of opposite patterns and energies and interconnectedness of it all.

Explore how to expand your practice beyond that limitation with Richard and Mary and allow “the yogic process to unfold where it counts – in the actual interplay of relationship with others.” This is where you can learn to embody your humanity, and become who you are, as you uncover the meaning of yoga.

Yoga is relationship; the continuous joining together of complimentary opposites that results in an unfolding of ever deepening layers of concentration, connection and insight. In this workshop we will work with the Ashtanga Vinyasa system of practice using form, movement, breath and metaphor to reflect this interconnectedness. This will allow our asana, pranayama and meditation practices to gradually deepen into subtle levels of awareness as we ride waves of sensation through the interfacing, interlinking, interpenetrating patterns of prana and apana, action and counter action, thought and counter thought. We will also explore how these patterns are revealed to be the fabric through which our yoga evolves as a support for actions and interactions in everyday life.

Morning Sessions:

In the mornings we will practice Ashtanga Vinyasa in an internal, contemplative and adaptive manner and experience the interdepent wave of Prana and Apana. Our exploration into the relationship of masculine and feminine energy and movements as a continuous joining and separation, will serve as a means of discovering how the dialectical approach produces a natural avenue into pranayama and meditation. Detailed attention will be placed on the form and quality of the poses, which are being strung upon the thread of the breath. Our practice will watch even the ideas, moods, emotions that arise and fall. Seeing this will allow us adapt the series and movements to our situation, thereby preventing injury, healing injury and arriving at a state optimal for meditation and pranayama practice.

Afternoon Sessions:

Sagely Stories of Interdependence: The Yoga Vasistha

In the afternoons we will practice sitting meditation, Sanskrit chant and we will delve into the non-dual philosophies of the wild and wonderful storybook, Yoga Vasishta. Yoga Vasistha is an enormous collection of myths, tales, philosophical teachings and beautiful descriptions of nature all mixed in with profoundly practical yoga and meditation instruction. Composed in Kashmir in the 12th century, it is an important and playful blending of Non-dual Vedanta, Shaivism, Mahayana Buddhism and Tantra. It will definitely play with any point of view or philosophical attitude that you might cling to too tightly. There will be opportunity for questions and answers to gain greater insights and inspiration from Richard and Mary.
