About Richard Freeman

Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968. He has spent nearly nine years in Asia studying various traditions which he incorporates into the Ashtanga yoga practice as taught by his principal teacher, Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. Richard's background includes studying Sufism in Iran, Zen and Vipassana Buddhist practice, Bhakti and traditional Hatha yoga in India. Starting in 1974 he also began an in-depth study of Iyengar yoga, which eventually led him to Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Richard is an avid student of both Western and Eastern philosophy, as well as Sanskrit. His ability to juxtapose various viewpoints, without losing the depth and integrity of each, has helped him develop a unique, metaphorical teaching style. Richard is the founder of the Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado which is his teaching home base. He has numerous practice DVD's and CD's, is the author of The Mirror of Yoga(2010) and travels throughout the world teaching courses, workshops and trainings.

About Mary Taylor

Mary Taylor began studying yoga in 1972, but it was not until 1988 and finding her primary teacher, Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois, and the Ashtanga Vinyasa system that she felt the profound and transformative impact that a dedicated and daily practice can have. She continues to study and practice yoga and Buddhist teachings with great enthusiasm and inquisitiveness, with an eye on how the residue that is produced on the mat (and cushion) through these teachings informs and supports all aspects of everyday life. She cofounded with Richard the Yoga Workshop and is the author of What Are You Hungry for? Women, Food and Spirituality, New Vegetarian Classics: Soups and New Vegetarian Classics: Entrees.

Richard and Mary's new writing on Ashtanga Yoga, the Art of Vinyasa has been published in winter 2016.

Art of Vinyasa

* Level: All level

As one of the first Western teachers to be certified to teach the Ashtanga method by K. Pattabhi Jois, Richard is world-renowned for his teaching of Ashtanga yoga in its most essential, philosophical, and meditative form. Together with his wife, Mary, the depth and richness of their close to a century of combined yoga experience is beyond compare.

This is a perfect opportunity for students who are relatively new to yoga to learn from the masters right off the bat and allow the seeds of profound philosophy and practice that may be challenging to grasp begin to germinate and eventually blossom. For yoga teachers or experienced practitioners, this is a wonderful chance to gain an even greater understanding of the subtleties of yoga.

Course Description

Yoga is the unfolding of relationship; the joining together of complimentary opposites and the ability to soften into the intelligence within any given context to allow the awakening of body and mind. This workshop will be an intricate exploration of this process through the lens of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system of practice. Following on an empty thread of awareness through and between postures, we will focus on the intentional sequence of form, thought, movement and breath that frees the mind, awakens the central channel and allows a meditative, flowing practice to naturally arise.

This workshop will be a step-by-step exploration of yoga postures experienced as a continuous joining and separating of masculine and feminine movements. Students will learn to pay close attention to the meditative quality of form and movement as a means of bringing refinement to their practice. Fine, detailed attention to subtle technique will prove to be the way of avoiding injury and integrating obstacles.

Imaginary Anatomy and Internal Forms

* Level: We suggest students have at least 1 year of yoga practice

Course Description

The power of imagination is profound. Through visualizing deity forms we automatically embody exquisite alignment. By envisioning “Kidney Wings” or “Cobra Hoods” as we breathe and move, subtle levels of awareness within body and mind naturally emerge.

In this immersion we will work with this traditional form of practice—using the imagination to understand the inexplicable—allowing us to link complimentary patterns of internal breath, movement and awareness. Together we will practice asana, study philosophy, Sanskrit chanting, pranayama and meditation. From this deep, internal perspective we will gradually develop strength, flexibility and openness of body and mind that can be embodied within the context of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.
