Many modern yoga classes scratch only the surface of yoga practice. While widely accessible, deeper dimensions—such as mudra, drishti, breathwork, bandha, and visualization—are rarely explored. These elements hold important keys to longevity, supporting the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems while fostering vitality throughout the aging process. We will be both practicing them and inquiring into their effects in these systems.
The training will provide a modern context for understanding these practices, their effects, and their benefits. It also integrates powerful yogic practices with insights from neuroscience and the evolution of yoga philosophy, including its dialogue with Buddhism and other spiritual traditions. By bridging traditional wisdom with modern scientific perspectives, this course offers a comprehensive framework for sustainable, life-affirming yoga practice.
This advanced 100-hour training with Doug Keller is designed for experienced yoga practitioners and teachers seeking to deepen their understanding of yoga’s therapeutic aspects, particularly in the context of healthy aging, and to deepen their understanding and experience of the more esoteric but effective practices that are too often ignored.
Asana Practice: Movement for Longevity
Explore the depth of asana practice with a focus on maintaining vitality and well-being as we age. This session will delve into how asana supports physical resilience, joint health, and overall longevity. Through these practices, we will have a clearer understanding about how these practices can be incorporated simply but powerfully into yoga classes, introducing students to their effects. In addition to the general asana practices, we also try to incorporate Mudra and Drishthi into practice to experience their subtle but powerful effects.
The Neurological Benefits of Yoga
A deep dive into the neurological perspective of yoga, examining how asana, pranayama, and lesser-explored practices contribute to cognitive health and nervous system regulation. As we gain a deeper understanding of the nervous system, particularly the vagus nerve, we may be able to further explore the interactions between the brain and the gastrointestinal system, and how they affect olders. We will explore accessible techniques that enhance brain function and support aging with clarity and ease.
Working with Older Students: Preventative and Therapeutic Approaches
Understanding the unique challenges that often come with age and explore yoga’s role in preventing and managing age-related health concerns, including Parkinson’s, Multiple sclerosis (MS), and other chronic conditions. Gain insights into how yoga can support balance, mobility, heart health and resilience.
Mudra & Drishti: Enhancing Pranayama and Meditation
Mudras and drishtis are essential yet often overlooked aspects of Hatha Yoga. This session will explore how these subtle practices refine pranayama, deepen meditation, and facilitate energetic alignment, including a deeper connection with the chakras.
Philosophy: Steadiness in Challenging Times
A journey through the philosophical landscape of Kashmir Shaivism and its Doctrine of Vibration, connecting it with later yoga philosophy and Buddhist thought. This exploration will provide insights into:
‧With the ‘foot’ firmly established in the yogic experience, knowing how to maintain steadiness, courage, and resilience in today’s world.
‧Ethical living and making wise choices in the challenging world.
‧Spiritual perspectives that foster inner clarity and strength.
‧Practical tools to navigate life’s uncertainties in different stages with wisdom and grace.
