Yoga, as outlined by Patanjali, is a progressive system of purification and refinement. In asana practice, we learn to progress safely regardless of the initial condition of stiffness or weakness, towards greater suppleness and strength from beginning to advanced poses. The systematic approach begins by working with the outermost layers of the body and progressing towards deepening awareness of the innermost Self. Inherent in the method is an understanding of the progression of learning from the gross to the subtle and from the surface towards the core.
