Simon Low, BWY and Yoga Alliance (E-RYT 500) & Yoga Alliance (SYT) teacher, is the Principal of The Yoga Academy offering foundational and continuing education to yoga teachers and students in the UK and internationally. After a career in the music industry based out of London, New York, Simon undertook training as yoga teacher and therapist 25 years ago with renowned yoga teacher, therapist and author Dr. Larry Payne at Samata International in Los Angeles, California. These studies were augmented by Simon's training in macrobiotics, bodywork and psycho-spiritual enquiry. Simon's foundational yoga teachings are informed by the those of Sri T Krishnamacharya and his primary students. Simon's current teachings reflect his continued training and on-going studies with international teachers in many forms of Hatha and Classical yoga, traditional Chinese and eastern medicine, Chi Kung, ancient and contemporary healing methodologies, centred-movement, psychology and physical therapy. Simon is an ongoing student of A.H. Almaas' Ridhwan School, but his primary teacher lives within himself, a relationship he continues to cultivate with the help and guidance of his current teachers and practice. He inspires others to cultivate the same relationship within themselves and their own yoga practices.

Following many years of teaching in the UK, Simon co-founded Triyoga in London, where he was Director of Yoga until 2003, since which time he has concentrated on teacher training at The Yoga Academy and on leading study intensives, workshops and rejuvenating yoga retreats around the world. Over the years, Simon has developed a unique and personal teaching style and now practices and teaches a harmonious combination of Yin and Yang Yoga; not as a set system but a balanced approach that can inform and enrich all styles of yoga. Yin and Yang Yoga offers fresh vitality to yoga practice, kindness and respect to the human form, transformative breathing practices, and for the mind - the space for peace and tranquility.

In 2007, Simon released his now very popular DVD "Yin and Yang Yoga" and in 2015 his Yin Yoga App.

12/15(Fri) 19:00-21:00

Explore Yin and Yang yoga as you never experienced before with Simon's unique approach:

  • Discover how to care for your joints with spiral movement patterns in your yang practice
  • Experience yin yoga as a 'non-dual' practice that connects to our true nature.
  • Learn the keys to have a truly balanced and effective 'hatha' (sun and moon, yin and yang) practice.

General Description

Yoga is a living tradition, and over the last 15+ years Yin and Yang yoga has evolved as an immensely popular and effective approach to yoga. The popularity of Simon's interpretation of yin and yang yoga lies in its accessibility, effectiveness and enjoyment, while it offers complete and balanced content honouring the implication of 'hatha': sun and moon, masculine and feminine, action and allowing, doing and not-doing, outer and inner etc. Simon's approach is a combination of continually flowing vinyasa and a broad spectrum of asana that build energy, flexibility and strength while deeply respecting the natural rhythms and construction of the human anatomy. Precision of alignment is balanced by circular and spiral movement patterns with particular emphasis on joint care and ease of movement. Physical and subtle anatomical considerations are equally honoured.

Simon's Yin Yoga teachings also incorporate a series of deeply restorative asana alongside postures inspired by Taoist yoga that stimulate and balance energy meridians and the multi-dimensional web of connective tissue, while offering a profoundly effective platform for enquiry within the many facets of 'being'. Ultimately yoga invites us to align our being to the rhythms of the natural world and embrace the purity of 'presence'.

Daily Schedule

SATURDAY AM: The '5 Key Principles' of an Effective Yoga Practice
9:30 – 12:00

In this session Simon will share his 5 key principles for getting the very best out of your yoga practice in body, mind and breath. Learn how to reduce wear and tear, increase energy and strength, breath more effectively, and develop heightened concentration and calm. This session includes lecture, interactions and a yang practice.

SATURDAY PM: An afternoon of Yin Yoga, Chant, Pranayama and Meditation
14:00 – 17:00

Yin yoga practiced mindfully and respectfully can be a significant and effective balance to our more muscular 'yang' practices, offering our body a broad spectrum of healing and wholesome asana, time to augment our breathing, and to develop our skills for deep concentration toward internal enquiry, stillness and surrender. The workshop will include anatomical teachings for a safe and effective yin practice with special reference to our fascial being, joints, respiratory and nervous systems.

SUNDAY AM: Crouching Tiger, Flying Dragon
9:30 – 12:00

A yang yoga led-practice workshop emphasising the balance of essential alignment with free-flowing circular and spiral centred-movement patterns, incorporating the latest developments within Simon's internationally popular looping vinyasa for heightened energy, strength, flexibility and concentration. This unique and highly effective sequence is informed by our primal developmental movement patterns and it offers itself as a highly effective sequence to cover all ranges of movement toward complete physical and energetic wellbeing.

SUNDAY PM: Yin Yoga as Meditation
14:00 – 17:00

While yin yoga is often presented as a practice to focus on the connective tissue of the physical body, and the energies of the subtle body, its greatest potential lies within its offering as a meditation practice, and an opportunity to cultivate a clearer connection to our true nature within a non-dual practice. Blending the more gentle and restorative elements of yin yoga with a series of recently refined and/or developed asana, we will explore fundamental principles for a more peaceful life practice on and off the mat.
