Joshua Chyan was born in the United States and raised in Taiwan. His first encounter with yoga began through his work in theatre, where he explored movement as a way to develop body awareness and expression. During only his second yoga class, he discovered Ashtanga Yoga and quickly formed a deep connection with the practice. As his journey continued, Joshua realized that yoga is far more than a series of poses on the mat—it is an ongoing exploration of physical freedom, flexibility, and inner awareness. The joy he found in practice gradually guided him from being a dedicated student to a teacher who is passionate about sharing his experience with others.
In both practice and teaching, Joshua does not confine himself to rigid systems or dogma. Instead, he emphasizes the sense of flow and rhythm within movement. He believes that every practitioner can discover their own unique cadence through yoga. His teaching approach centers on “exploring boundaries with safety,” translating the functional intelligence of the body’s muscles into clear and accessible guidance. Joshua encourages students to approach each stretch with openness and curiosity, allowing the body to gradually unfold with a sense of spaciousness and ease.
In his classes, Joshua hopes to cultivate a deeper sense of body control and confidence in his students. Through warm and attentive guidance, he helps practitioners build body awareness—learning how to activate muscles with lightness while protecting the joints with care. What he hopes students carry with them after class is not only the satisfaction of movement, but also a sense of wonder toward their own potential. Just as he has discovered in his own practice, small and consistent efforts can gradually bring greater flexibility, balance, and vitality into everyday life.
For Joshua, yoga is both a personal experiment with the body and a bridge between practice on the mat and the art of living. Through conscious breathing and open movement, he believes that everyone can discover a more stable, spacious, and authentic sense of self.
