This fascia workshop series focuses on the deep front line, lateral line, arm lines, and functional lines.

The deep front line provides structural support and core stability. The lateral line coordinates flexion and extension of the body and plays a key role in controlling deceleration during walking, running, and jumping. The arm lines are responsible for upper-limb stability and mobility; maintaining their elasticity may help reduce issues such as neck and shoulder tension or repetitive strain in the hands and wrists. The functional lines extend the arm lines in a spiral pattern, connecting upper-limb movement to the pelvis and lower limbs, supporting force transmission and contributing to core stability.

Across the August and November 3-hour workshops, Ann Huang will guide participants through structured movement sequencing that integrates fascial concepts into yoga asana practice. By first isolating individual fascial lines and then gradually integrating them, students will gain a clearer understanding and embodied experience of fascial anatomy and function.

Course Themes

8.22 Lower Body & Pelvis

Deep Front Line & Lateral Line Practice

The interplay between the deep front line and lateral line supports dynamic stability of the pelvis, ankles, knees, and hips.

Articular cartilage primarily absorbs impact forces. When joint mobility is restricted, discomfort and stiffness may occur, which are often experienced through the surrounding muscles and fascia. Therefore, maintaining fascial elasticity is essential for optimal movement function in both daily life and physical practice.

Through exploring and practicing the deep front line and lateral line, participants will develop clearer proprioception of the lower body and pelvic fascial structures, supporting improved posture and higher-quality yoga practice.

11.7 Upper Body & Core

Arm Lines & Functional Lines Practice

The arms influence the body’s central axis (spine) and fascial network. Poor shoulder alignment can significantly affect the rib cage, neck, breathing mechanics, and lower back.

Compensatory patterns in the arm lines are often associated with forward head posture, rounded shoulders, and scapular misalignment, which may lead to conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, elbow or shoulder impingement, and chronic myofascial pain over time.

Through arm line and functional line training, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how upper-body posture influences whole-body fascial tension, enhancing awareness of the connection between the shoulders, neck, and core in both daily life and yoga practice.

About Fascia & Myofascia

Fascia is a three-dimensional connective tissue network that envelops and links muscles, bones, organs, blood vessels, and nerves. It functions like a continuous elastic web throughout the body, transmitting tension and sensory information from head to toe, supporting structural integrity, coordination, and movement efficiency.

Myofascia refers to the deeper fascial layers associated with muscles and skeletal structures. It assists in muscle contraction and plays a key role in force transmission during movement.

Effects of Fascial Adhesion

Prolonged static posture may lead to fascial adhesions and reduced tissue elasticity. When adhesions occur:

  1. Movement becomes restricted and requires more energy
  2. Postural alignment may be altered
  3. Tissue elasticity decreases, leading to stiffness
  4. Research has shown fascial thickening in individuals with chronic back pain
  5. Adhesion is also considered a sign of tissue aging

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop a deeper understanding of fascial lines within yoga and movement practice
  • Integrate fascial training into yoga or daily movement for improved fluidity, strength, and elasticity
  • Enhance tendon and ligament load capacity, reduce joint stress and compensatory patterns, and support safer movement practice

Suitable For

  • Yoga practitioners with noticeable compensatory patterns seeking improved core stability and balance
  • Individuals aiming to improve posture, movement efficiency, and overall lightness in the body
  • Students interested in deepening awareness of fascial anatomy and movement science
  • Yoga practitioners, teachers, and anyone interested in anatomy and movement education
  • All levels welcome, from beginners to advanced practitioners
