— An Introductory course suitable for general practitioners and seniors

In this introductory course we’ll focus on the most fundamental and practical purpose of yoga asana practice: joint mobility — freedom of movement.

We most often think of yoga in terms of the flexibility and strength of muscles.

But the whole purpose of muscles is to move joints — and if a joint doesn’t move freely, then what is a poor muscle to do? It gets tight, weak, and often becomes exhausted and painful.

Joints move their best against some small resistance. We often have flexibility problems in yoga because we don’t have the right kind of resistance. If we are to fully enjoy and benefit from our yoga and make satisfying progress, we often need to introduce resistance in just the right way, to get joints and muscles to work together well.

This often means using some props. The use of ‘props’ has always been a part of yoga practice, but too often they are just used as a support to ‘hold’ a pose when we are tight, when actually they can be used more effectively to help us move better.

In this course, we’ll be learning the fundamentals of yoga as a way to move better, and a helpful part of the course will be to use resistance bands as a catalyst for achieving greater freedom and mobility, as well as strength and flexibility in key muscles that are vital to healthy movement.

This is especially true for the upper body, where there are often problems with making the hands and arms weight-bearing — and even when that is possible, the joints and muscles of the shoulders and upper body are not mobilized effectively. Resistance bands are especially effective for the upper body in yoga poses, and also help to connect the upper body to the core and hips.

The practices will of course not be limited to just working with resistance bands: we’ll take a variety of approaches, and reinforce the most important points of practice so that you’ll easily remember them, while keeping things fun and interesting!

You’ll benefit greatly from this course by improving your mobility, flexibility, and strength — and you’ll understand yoga asanas more deeply, both in terms of their practical value for you, and how you can practice your yoga most effectively

Suitable for

  • Practitioners interested in joint health and mobility Looking to improve the body's freedom of movement from the ground up — beyond flexibility and advanced poses.
  • Practitioners dealing with shoulder or upper body issues Struggling with chronic shoulder tension, weak arms, or restricted movement, and ready to find a more effective path forward.
  • Yoga teachers looking to enrich their teaching toolkit Especially those working with older students or beginners — seeking safer, more structured ways to guide students into a genuine understanding of how their body works.
