Description

Incorporating a daily meditation practice into our life keeps us attuned to the importance of living ordinary moments with mindful attention. Although some people seem gifted to be naturally calm and aware, these qualities are actually particular skills that anyone can cultivate in order to live a more ease filled and joyful life.

In Mindfulness, it is not the presence or absence of emotions or thoughts that is at issue, rather it is how we relate to them. Guiding ourselves in a committed daily practice teaches us how to become more self reliant and self led, even when our motivation to practice feels less than inspired. This practice increases our ability to make skillful choices in our ordinary moments of life without cutting off from our inner world, greatly enriching our sense of aliveness.

In 2 sessions (June and August), Sarah will give brief talks on how developing a formal daily practice of Mindfulness can greatly enhance our experience of our self, and our life. In each class, she will share a short sequence of yin poses for preparing the body for the meditation seat, as well as offering simple, clear meditation instructions mingled with time to practice sitting meditation together. Sarah will also allow time for addressing questions.

Topic of June Session

In June Sarah will focus on our meditation seat, the breath as our ally, and how to work with challenging obstacles that arise in meditation as tools for growth rather than problems to fix or avoid. Connection with our meditation posture as a vehicle for clearing the mind encourages a regular practice in which many insights can bloom. The meditation practices focused on in this workshop are intended to develop one’s stability of attention as well as a growing capacity to identify and tolerate a myriad of sensations that will expand your overall sense of aliveness.

Topic of August Session

In August Sarah will elaborate on these themes by including how to integrate Mindfulness practice with everyday emotions and thoughts. As we have all experienced, strong emotions can solidify into moods and assumptions about ourselves and others. In Mindfulness meditation, we learn that although intense feelings cannot be prevented, with practice, we can learn to develop healthier relationships to everything that happens in us, or to us. The meditation practices focused on in this workshop will develop a greater capacity for recognizing and befriending difficult emotions and mind states, a skill that naturally deepens our sense of self love and intimacy with others.

Sarah Powers began teaching in 1987. She is the founder and author of Insight Yoga, which interweaves the insights and practices of Yoga, Buddhism, Taoism, and Transpersonal Psychology into an integral practice to discover and enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of floor poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems, combined with an alignment-based slow flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga, Ashtanga, Iyengar teachings, and QIgong. Sarah feels that enlivening the physical and pranic bodies, as well as learning to open to our psychological patterns is paramount for preparing one to deepen and nourish insights into one's essential nature--a natural state of awareness. She draws from her studies in Transpersonal Psychology, as well as her in-depth training in the Vipassana, Tantric and Dzogchen practices of Buddhism. Her newest book, Lit From Within: Yoga, Teachings and Practices for Illuminating the Inner Life, is published in 2021.
