Workshop- 8.6~8.8 (All Levels)
The Thread of Nectar:Ashtanga Yoga Workshop with Richard Freeman

8.6(Fri)
7- 8:30pm: Introduction to the Subtle Practices of Ashtanga Yoga
8:30 - 9:30pm: Philosophy Talk – Obstacles to Practice

n this class we will -explore the basics of internal breathing, the energy connections in the core of the body and the subtle movements that compose the Ashtanga system. This class is open to raw beginners and to experienced students who want to get deep and back to basics. Ashtanga Yoga follows the sequential rhythms of the breath to produce internal alignment and energy conjunction. Just the beginning movements and techniques of the system can awaken core energy, which, in turn, gives deep meditation and insight.

8.7(Sat)

9 -11:30am: Postures on a Thread: Here we will explore details of the traditional series, finding power in the transitions and new alignment depth in old poses. We will bring the brilliant core of the central axis out through the forms of the postures, turning them into mudras of feeling and expression. Through the continuous joining and separating of masculine and feminine movements, the radiance of internally integrated yoga postures will be experienced. Fine detailed attention to subtle technique will prove to be the way of avoiding injury and integrating obstacles.
2 - 4:30pm: Backbending and Threads of Energy: This will be an energetic exploration of the whole body patterns found in back bending and then a precise re-visioning of the essentials of finishing postures. With emphasis on the little details which make them feel really good, we will let them lead us into pranayama and bandha practice as a natural awakening of intelligence.

8.8(Sun)

9 - 11:30am: Internal Methodology of Vinyasa: A step-by-step exploration of the basic thread of form, breathing, and movement upon which the classical series of postures in the Ashtanga Viniyasa system is strung. We will explore the bio-mechanical principles of alignment and the meditative principle of awakening core breathing in context of the Ashtanga system. Using a rich context of philosophy and meditative insight, this class will allow participants to bring a new degree of freedom, technical skill and compassion to their every day practice.
2 - 4:30pm:The Basics of Pranayama: Weave together the internal aspects of an integrated practice through the breath. We will learn the fundamentals of a beginning pranayama class including techniques for balancing internal and external alignment so that pranayama is safe and effective.

Immersion - 8.10 - 8.15
(Levels: We suggest students have at least 1 year of yoga practice )
THE MIRROR OF YOGA - Awakening the Intelligence of Body and Mind

Ashtanga Yoga, is the art of following an empty thread of awareness through and between postures, breaths, thoughts and techniques. Yoga poses, breaths, techniques and philosophies are the mirrors of yoga to reflect and awaken the intelligence. This intelligence allows us to enter into each pattern of our awareness and technique, to experience it in context and to then release it. The flowing Vinyasa form of Ashtanga Yoga is the ideal practice to reflect and refine an understanding of this intelligence of body and mind.

During these classes we will uncover the context and patterns of an internally rooted asana practice. Moving in and out of the paradoxical heart of the Vinyasa system we can solve the problems and obstacles which commonly arise through this type of practice. This will give the teacher better tools with which to see the individual nature of the student and to assist them in avoiding injury.

Daily Schedule

09:30 -12:00 Asana practice (this would be the more rigorous asana of the day)
12:00 - 01:30 Lunch Break

02:15 - 03:30 Philosophy Lecture*
03:45 - 05:00 Restorative yoga, Pranayama, Finishing poses, and Q & A.

Who is Richard Freeman ?

Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968. He has spent nearly nine years in Asia studying various traditions which he incorporates into the Ashtanga yoga practice taught by his principal teacher, K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. His background includes Zen and Vipassana Buddhist practice, Bhakti and traditional Hatha Yoga in India, Sufism in Iran and, starting in 1974, an in-depth study of Iyengar Yoga. He is still an avid student of both Western and Eastern philosophy, as well as Sanskrit. His ability to juxtapose various viewpoints, without losing the depth and integrity of each, has helped Richard develop a unique, metaphorical teaching style. He lives with his family in Boulder, Colorado where he is the director of the Yoga Workshop.
