This Weekend Intensive is the first of two. “Yin, Yang & Pranayama: Creating a Balance from Inside Out Weekend Intensive II” will be held October 20-21, 2012.
All “Advanced” practice is from a solid foundation in the “Basics”!
This two-day Intensive will offer all yoga practitioners, from beginner to advanced, methods to an overall balanced practice. We will see how to bring the yin element (the breathing and inner attitude) into a yang asana practice. And most importantly, we will learn how to bring the practice off-the-mat and into life!
In this course, students will learn first to build a clear and steady foundation of the basic yoga breathing pattern, to refine how the breath is applied in pranayama and asana as well as in yin yoga and seated meditation. Second, we will learn how to bring the element of yin into a yang asana practice with body alignment. The yang asana practice will be a Hatha-based practice and is suitable for yoga practitioners of all levels. Options and variations will be given in the practice as needed.
The morning session will focus primarily on pranayama, which also includes kriyas, to learn the basic breathing pattern and pranayama techniques. After a small break, we will move into an alignment-based hatha practice.
The afternoon session will include a lecture on mindfulness, group discussion, and journal time, followed by a yin practice.
Students will take away a strong foundation in yin and yang practices, learning:
- The synchronization of breath and asana, establishing and refining the basic breath pattern and applying that in a yang asana practice
- Kriya and pranayama techniques
- Basic body alignment for asana practice
- Insight Yin practice
- How to balance the yin and yang elements in practice
- How to bring the practice into life

About Michelle Chu
Michelle studies with Sri O.P. Tiwari and Paul Dallaghan whom she completed certified 500-hour teacher training with. She comes from a Hatha/Ashtanga yoga background and her practice is also deeply and evenly influenced by pranayama and yin yoga. While studying and deepening her yoga practice, life brought Michelle to Sarah Powers, the founder of Insight Yoga and author of the book by the same name. Michelle first met Sarah Powers as her workshop translator in Taiwan. Sarah's teaching of interweaving the mindfulness insights, practice of yoga and Buddhist wisdom resonated so much with Michelle, she went further to study with Sarah in Jarkata and London in her workshops and as well as completing her Level 1& 2 yin yoga teacher training. By practicing yin yoga and developing a habit of mindfulness practice, Michelle's yang/dynamic yoga practice has shifted. Yoga not only provided her a deeper understanding of the Self and truth, it also brought her transformative changes and the ability to embody harmony, love, and joy in life. On this note, Michelle is grateful of all the inspiration and teachings from every teacher on this path of Yoga.
