Richard Freeman has been a student of yoga since 1968. He has spent nearly nine years in Asia studying various traditions which he incorporates into the Ashtanga yoga practice as taught by his principal teacher, K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. Richard’s background includes studying Sufism in Iran, Zen and Vipassana Buddhist practice, Bhakti and traditional Hatha yoga in India. Starting in 1974 he also began an in-depth study of Iyengar yoga, which eventually led him to Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Richard is an avid student of both Western and Eastern philosophy, as well as Sanskrit. His ability to juxtapose various viewpoints, without losing the depth and integrity of each, has helped him develop a unique, metaphorical teaching style. Richard is the founder of the Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado which is his teaching home base. He has numerous practice DVD’s and CD’s, is the author of The Mirror of Yoga and travels throughout the world teaching courses, workshops and trainings.

Morning Session: Flashes of insight using subtle alignment

Following an empty thread of awareness through and between postures, breaths, thoughts and techniques is true Ashtanga. In this workshop we will learn to use core techniques like Dristi and Bandha to awaken a subtle intelligence. This intelligence allows us to enter into each pattern of our awareness and technique, to experience it in context and to then release it. We can then play with the paradoxes of breathing and the complementarity of technique to open the central thread of the body. Experiencing therein a subtle kindness and joy, allows us to bring a new degree of freedom, technical skill and compassion to our everyday practice.

Afternoon Session: From asana deep into meditation through the Yoga Taravali

The Yoga Taravali is not only a beautifully composed summation of the internal practice of hatha and tantric yoga, it was so much loved by Pattabhi Jois that he used its invocation, “Vande gurunam caranaravinde”, as the daily beginning of practice. We will read and explore the text to discover not only the sublime profundity of nondual tantrika philosophy, but also the yoga practices which give a direct experience of something astonishing and delightful.

Practices such as Pranayama, Bandha, Listening to Nada and Samadhi are tied together to illustrate how Prana enters the middle path to unfold into Her natural joyous form. Simultaneously the text unfolds the subtlest levels of non-dual Vedanta to unravel common misperceptions and beliefs about the experiences that arise in our practices.

Saturday Morning Session: Alignment in meditative flow

An intricate exploration of the postures of the primary series of the Ashtanga system. The universal form of internally integrated yoga posture will be experienced as a continuous joining and separating of masculine and feminine movements where prana and apana naturally and organically interpenetrate all through the body.

Students will learn to pay close attention to the meditative quality of form and movement as a means of bringing refinement to their practice

Saturday Afternoon Session: Square one, touching earth

To flow gracefully and effortlessly in and out of poses, it is essential to stay vibrant and grounded in the breathing. This class will be based on a study of the essential and elusive activity of Mulabandha and the strong grounding effect of correct ujjayi pranayama. The actual Mulabandha is a conjunction of complimentary movement patterns which open the central axis of the body right up through the root of the palate. We will flow seamlessly through these movement patterns, following the thread of the central axis.

Sunday Morning Session: Back bending and radiant energy

This will be an energetic exploration of the whole body patterns found in back bending with emphasis on the little details which eliminate joint compression and leave you feeling open and clear.

Sunday Afternoon Session: Inversions and then a flood of nectar

In this class we will refine the Finishing Poses (Inversions and sitting posture) by working the subtle movements of the shoulders, arms, neck, head, spine, tongue and palate. Like a perfect desert after a fine meal, these gentle subtleties will aid in making Pranayama and meditation natural.
