4/4-11 & 7/25-8/1 300-hr Iyengar Teacher Training (2014-2016)

“tatra sthitau yatnah abhyasah” Yoga Sutras of Patanjali I.13
(The practice of yoga is the commitment to become established in the state of freedom)

Iyengar Yoga is relatively unknown in Taiwan, but it has been popular in the West for decades. According to the Yoga Journal, it is the most practiced style of yoga in the United States today. Its teacher certification system’s long history even predates the Yoga Alliance’s registered teacher standards (Yoga Alliance was founded in 1999.) Rigorously trained to an unusually high standard, certified Iyengar teachers are known for their clear demonstrations of the postures, a well-trained eye for the student’s individual physical and energetic alignment, and specific teaching points that are aimed at awaken the body’s intelligence.

SPACE is honored to have the opportunity to bring this refine method of practicing to the students of Taiwan by offering a 300-hour Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training Course. We are especially excited that the course is taught by Peter Scott, one of Australia's pre-eminent senior Iyengar Yoga teachers.

Faculty: Peter Scott, Senior Intermediate Level 3

Peter Scott has been practicing yoga since 1977 and has devoted over 30 years to the art and science of yoga. He is a Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher based in Melbourne, Australia at Yoga Jivana (Yoga Life) Centre, which he runs with his wife Sue Scott. He began teaching in 1982 and currently runs Teacher Training Courses and Workshops in Australia and Overseas.

Peter’s classes, workshops and trainings are a culmination of his years of dedicated practice and teaching. He is much loved by students in Australia and overseas for his ability to inspire and guide the practitioner along the path of yoga, and for the clarity he creates when teaching. Peter’s instructions and his approach to teaching leads the student into that penetration of awareness to where body, senses, organs of action, mind and intellect work together to give lightness of body and calmness of mind during the asana practice. Through his long-term practice of yoga combined with his original study of Naturopathy and Remedial Massage (Grad. SSNT 1985), Peter has extensive knowledge of the body, its functions and how that relates to yogic wisdom.

A teacher trainer in Iyengar Yoga since 1990, Peter has specifically developed this approach for Teacher Training in Iyengar Yoga from his years of experience, to provide a clear and effective method of learning the art and science of yoga teaching and help yoga students’ progress seamlessly from being in the class to standing in front and teaching the class.

What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga, created by B. K. S. Iyengar (born 1918), is recognized as the safest, most scientific and therapeutic style of yoga. At the age of 15, as an ailing child, Iyengar started studying yoga to improve his health. His Guru, T. Krishnamacharya, often referred to as “the father of modern Yoga”, who is also the Guru to Pattabhi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga Yoga. While much of the modern yoga is based on the teachings of Krishnamacharya, Iyengar is often credited for popularizing yoga around the world. and his seminal manual Light on Yoga (1965), often called “the Bible of yoga”, has been the source book for many yoga students.

Using his own body, he persistently studied in great detail the effect of on the anatomical structure, physiological functioning, psychological effect, and the length of time required to bring one’s body, mind and spirit in union, the result was a style of yoga that is characterized by great attention to detail and precise focus on body alignment in practicing Asanas. Teaching his insights since 1936, he pioneered the use of props as aids to help student safely ease into a pose. This enables students to perform the asanas correctly and minimizing the risk of injury or strain. Props such as blocks, straps, chairs, blankets and bolsters are now widely used by yoga studios of all types. Today Iyengar Yoga is taught and practiced all over the world as a safe and powerful method to relieve modern-day stress and to promote total physical and spiritual well-being. It can be practiced by all body types, ages and is especially beneficial to those with certain medical conditions.

Because of its numerous health benefits, Iyengar Yoga is often perceived as a form of “physical” yoga, but it is firmly rooted in traditional yogic philosophy. Iyengar Yoga is based on the Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, perhaps the most authoritative of all yoga texts with 196 sutras that serve as roadmaps for the inner journey. As such, Iyengar Yoga is a system of life which when practiced with awareness can develop every level of our being - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual - enhancing all aspects of our lives.

Course Introduction

The Iyengar Teacher Training Course* is a comprehensive and rigorous 300-hour course, covering the Iyengar “Introductory Certificate I and II*” syllabus. As is required by Sri BKS Iyengar, this course will be conducted over a three-year period and include 200 hours of teacher training and 100 hours of practical observation and adjusting/assisting. It offers a clear and effective approach to learning the art and science of yoga teaching, with the basis of the course lays in the cultivation of a strong personal practice and the exploration and study of yogic principles and wisdom. It requires a dedicated commitment to ongoing practice and study between the contact sessions so it is important that participants be self-motivated.

Yoga teaching is firmly based on subjective understanding, as it is the delivery of the experiential knowledge derived from personal practice. Therefore, this course not only includes knowledge based objective study, the subjective, experientially based learning drawn from daily yoga practice is specifically emphasized. As such, the aim of the course is the development of experience. This requires:

  • the prudence of practice – strength,
  • the skills of technique – knowledge and
  • the wisdom of the seers – compassion.

Who should take this course?

  • Aspiring teachers who want to develop essential skills necessary to embark on their journey to teach yoga**, but not necessary sit for the external Iyengar certification assessment.
  • Teachers of Yoga who would like to refine their teaching skills with the precise and subtle Iyengar method.

Becoming a Certified Teacher of Iyengar Yoga

The system of teaching Iyengar Yoga is methodical and progressive emphasizing a systematic approach to teaching asana and pranayama applying the methods of technique, timings and sequence to achieve yogasana. The process of certification is based on a process consisting of five levels with several sub levels1.

Certification Levels in Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training

  • Introductory (Level I and II)
  • Intermediate Junior (Levels I, II and III)
  • Intermediate Senior (Levels I, II and III)
  • Advanced Junior (Levels I, II and III)
  • Advanced Senior (Levels I, II)

Training Process

  • The teacher training is for a minimum of 2 years
  • The teacher training primarily focuses on:
    • Personal practice
    • Acquiring clarity in giving instructions
    • Learning to make subtle adjustments with the use of props
    • Understanding problems faced by specific individuals
  • The trainee is qualified to teach only after the completion of Introductory Level II.
  • The teacher can then appear for the higher levels (Junior Intermediate, Senior Intermediate, Junior and Senior Advanced) after a minimum gap of one and a half year each between each level.

Syllabus and examination

  • Each level has its own syllabus for practice and teaching
  • Each exam has three components:
    1. Theory paper: Questions about asanas, pranayama, anatomy, physiology and yoga.
    2. Demonstration of asanas and pranayama.
    3. Demonstration of teaching skills

It is not just the “time” or “years” of practice that makes one eligible for a particular level of certification but the “quality” of practice.

To progress a teacher must, at an assessment, meet the standard of practice and teaching appropriate for the level. It is important to note that teachers may train teachers, assess, teach remedial and pregnancy classes only when specific levels of certification are attained. Levels above Intermediate Junior Level III are assessed by Mr. Iyengar or his designate and teachers above this level are considered senior teachers. Teacher training and assessment procedures have been established over the years to worldwide standards under the guidance of BKS Iyengar.1

FAQ

1. Can you tell me more about B.K.S. Iyengar?

Named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people, B. K. S. Iyengar is considered one the foremost yoga teachers in the world. His teachings were first published in 1966 as Light on Yoga. This book has been translated into 18 languages. Today, he is the author of 14 books, including the bestselling Light on Life.

Born on December 18, 1918, Iyengar struggled with malaria, tuberculosis, and typhoid fever, throughout his childhood. At the age of 15, his brother-in-law and his guru, Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, asked Iyengar to come to Mysore to study yoga to improve his health. Iyengar was sent to Pune, Maharashtra by his guru to teach yoga when he was 18.

In 1952, Iyengar started gaining international recognition when he began teaching abroad in London, Switzerland, Paris and elsewhere. The popularity of yoga in the West has been attributed in large part to Iyengar. In 1975, Iyengar opened the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, in memory of his late wife. Now in his 90s, he still continues his daily practice. Iyengar's daughter, Geeta, and son, Prashant, have gained international acclaim as teachers. They are also the chief teachers of his method at the Institute in Pune.

2. If I can’t finish the entire course, can the hours I accumulated be used in other Iyengar teacher trainings?

Yes, the hours can easily be used in other Iyengar teacher trainings taught by Peter Scott or Sue Scott (they have ongoing programs in Hong Kong and Australia.) You will also receive a Certificate of Participation including detailed letter explaining what studies the Course has covered to the point of your departure. As the syllabus for Iyengar Introductory Level I and II is the same worldwide, this Certificate allows the teacher in other Iyengar teacher training programs to assess how far along you are in the syllabus.

3. What if I can’t attend one of the contact sessions?

You may make up the missed training session in one of Peter or Sue Scott’s other teacher training programs aboard.

4. Can I sign up for the course if I have never taken any Iyengar classes, but I have many years of experience in other style of yoga?

No, you must have previous Iyengar Yoga experience before the course begins. Your Iyengar experience can be with any certified Iyengar teacher, not necessary limited to the number of hours that you’ve studied with Peter Scott.

5. Can I still sign up for the course if my Iyengar Yoga experience is less than 100 hours?

Yes, you can still sign up for the course to become a yoga teacher. After successful completion of the course, you may register with Yoga Alliance at the RYT -200 level, but you might not qualify to take the external assessment to become a certified Iyengar teacher. If you have accumulated 90 hours by attending all of the 2013 Iyengar Yoga immersions and workshops at SPACE YOGA, the other 10 hours can be made up later on and you will still qualify to take the external assessment..

6. What is Yoga Alliance?

Yoga Alliance is an organization that was started in 1999 as a way to create recognized standards for yoga teachers and yoga teacher trainings. More and more yoga studios are requiring their teachers to register with the Yoga Alliance, either at the 200 or 500 hour level. Yoga Alliance registration, however, is not a legal requirement for teaching yoga. Currently there are no legal certification requirements to be a yoga teacher.

7. Does this course qualify as a Yoga Alliance 200-hour Training?

With the successful completion of all the requirements of the program, you will receive your Diploma evidencing your training. You may also register with the Yoga Alliance (www.yogaalliance.org) at the RYT-200 level. You will receive your Yoga Alliance 200-Hour Certification (RYT200) as soon as your application is processed and your registration fee is paid. Yoga Alliance 200 Hour Certification offers the added benefit of a listing on their website and the recognition of an international certifying body. Yoga Alliance certification is also a requirement for employment at many gyms and yoga studios.
