Jordan was brought up in Malaysia, but was educated and had lived in the US. He loves drawing as much as yoga. He is a trained fashion designer, artist, dancer and now a yoga teacher. He studied dance while living in the US and performed as a modern dancer.
From the strenuous and busy life of a designer, Jordon transitioned to that of a dancer, and later rediscovered himself in yoga. He first came to yoga as a way of releasing stress and dealing with fatigue. After years of practicing, studying and reflecting, he slowly gained the experience in yoga therapy that serves to provide his students an unique yoga experience. He has studied multiple styles of yoga, ranging from Anusara, Yin, Vinyasa, Ashtanga and Iyengar Yoga.
He is most interested in Richard Freeman's teaching in the lineage of Ashtanga Yoga. From which he learns to observe the transformation of the mind and body through regular yoga practice as an inquiry into his own life. With a diverse background and multi-disciplinary interests, Jordan uses yoga asana and philosophy as a way of developing awareness to help him unite mind, body and soul, freeing himself by constantly looking within.
Among all the great teachers he has studied with, Jordan is most influenced by the Canadian master teacher Hart Lazer, who has a background in trauma counseling and yoga therapy. He completed Hart’s 350 hours of Iyengar inspired hatha yoga training, learning asana, philosophy, Buddhist meditation and therapeutic yoga. Besides studying with him every year, Jordan is also Hart’s apprentice in intensive workshops and teacher trainings in Asia. In addition, Jordan is currently in the process of completing his Pain Care Yoga certificate with the Canadian yoga therapist Neil Pearson. It is a training that integrates yoga into pain care and therapeutic practices.
Jordan’s classes are physically challenging, unique and fun. Much like his diverse background, Jordan’s knowledge and teaching came from the combination of Ashtanga and Iyengar lineage, yoga philosophy, human anatomy, alignment, pain care, yoga therapy, Buddhist meditation and pranayama. He strongly believes that each individual is unique to their own experience, and that the role of the teacher is to empower students to see clearly. Drawing from his own life experiences and basing on the psychology and physiology of trauma based therapeutic yoga, Jordon creates a mindful yoga experience that helps the students to cope with physical and emotional stress. He also uses creative ways to lead students into their own capacity to experience yoga themselves.
Jordan’s asana approach is about giving space before creating space. It is done through relaxing, listening, observing, pausing, and experiencing the mind and body before reacting. His teaching philosophy is about “working in” instead of “working out”, so the students do not fall into old habits and dogma. Instead, they learn to listen to the body so they may act mindfully off the mat. Jordan is a big believer in Ahimsa when it comes to the yoga practice; it is about finding the right practice so the body is restored, renewed and reconnected to live in a conscious and auspicious life.
“In yoga, it is not only about asana, but through asana we may find ways to see clearly who we really are, and the essence lies in mindfulness, so we are awake enough to bring a sattvic life to ourselves as well as all sentient being” ~ Jordan
