Is Yoga Philosophy Important?

Yoga is a broad subject, in no way limited to the physical practice of asana.

The Yoga traditions in India are a precious heritage. They have been combined with meditation and spiritual practice for thousands of years. Most people are introduced to yoga through the practice of yoga poses and so yoga is often mistaken for calisthenics or acrobatics. Many think the purpose of yoga is to twist the body like a contortionist or to look at the world upside down and that these are the highest practices of yoga.

In fact, this view is not totally wrong. After all, one cannot pursue deeper practices until the body is healthy. However, true health comes from the union of the body, mind and soul. This is total health. The true meaning of“Yoga” in Sanskrit is “union, to become one”. This is a“union of body, mind and spirit, a merging of the individual Self and the Universal into One. Thus, only through the fine balance of a healthy body and a mindful sense of awareness can one experience true union in Yoga.

Why does SPACE wish to hold a series of yoga philosophy lectures?

Before Space yoga was founded, the yoga world in Taiwan focused a lot of time and energy on teaching people how to soften the hard parts of the body, and harden the soft parts, creating a big interest in the physical asana practice. This strong promotion of asana introduced Taiwanese to only a small portion of yoga.

The ultimate purpose of yoga is to connect with the inner self and to unite body, mind and soul, and eventually become One with the Universal. Other than asana, what else is yoga? This is what SPACE would like to share.

SPACE never considered itself a yoga gym or a yoga bushiban, or a “better” place to sweat. SPACE yoga wishes to be a pioneer in Taiwan for yoga and culture, an information center for yoga professionals, to raise the standard of Yoga teaching in Taiwan to international standards. It is in this spirit that SPACE YOGA was created.

Who is DaDa?

A'ca'rya Candreshvara'nanda

CHANDRESH VARA NANDA, is lovingly called DaDa by those who know him. In Sanskrit DaDa means “brother”. He is indeed a brother to everyone and treats everyone as his equal. DaDa is most well known in Taiwan for his collaboration with Hsian-Fong Chio to translate Patanjali's classic Yoga Sutras into Chinese.

Dada is fluent in Sanskrit and has a great understanding of the spiritual lineages of India and of Yoga Philosophy. He currently teaches philosophy at the SDM Yoga Center (Seva Dhal Mission, the Path of Bliss, a branch of A'nanda Ma'rga) and is the secretary of the international spiritual yoga meditation organization ‘A'nanda Ma'rga’.

Experience and Background:

1. 1969 initiated into the study of Ananda Marga Sadhana culta' in Mumbai, India
2. 1978 dedicated to social service in Varanasi, India
3. 1979-1980 worked in charge of educational works.
4. 1981-1983 worked as the general training secretary for the training department.
5. 1984-1990 worked as Praca'raka, the propaganda secretary for India's different ranks.
6. Worked as Acarya, the spiritual teacher and general training secretary in the training department.
7. Worked as the director for Far Eastern Central Asia Yoga Society.

In June 1969, at the age of 11, DaDa met his Guru from Ananda Marga , the Guru who has brought great influence and made an impression on his life. This sage in orange robes taught DaDa over a period of several years how to sit in meditation.

”The meditation techniques my Guru taught me were simple and systematic as well as scientific.” The efforts of many years of learning have greatly changed his path in life. From a young age, Dada practiced diligently, so he could become an Acarya and assist others on the path of spirituality.

DaDa believes fully in the potential of spiritual growth. This growth comes from practices in inner reflection (introverted practices) and social service, not from following superficial dogmas and regulations. (Extroverted practice) He humbly said,” If it wasn't for the guidance of my spiritual Guru Shrii Shrii A'nandamuti ji, this spiritual journey would not have been possible.” Because of this, Dada is more than willing to assist and help all who are interested in exploring spirituality and growth.
