Yogi of April 2006 ─ David Hsiung

Yoga? Isn't that some fancy fashion that modern urban women are after? There is no way that the zombie-like me can get into this.

After urged and pulled by my good friends for a month or two, I started my yogic journey with a wondrous heart. I still remember my uneasiness and curiosity when I first stepped into SPACE. I was uneasy because I have had several surgeries due to a car accident year ago, and I wasn't sure if I can physically afford to be a human pretzel. At the same time, I was also curious to see what it is about this ancient art that has charmed the world ubiquitously.

I“devoted”my first time to Hot yoga, something I absolutely had no idea what Ifor myself into at the time. 1/3 way through, I was already sweating profusely. I felt comfortable as I witnessed my sweat dripping down drop by drop onto the floor. But proceeding into the second 1/3 of the class, I actually felt like vomiting. I was struggling between giving in and hanging on till the end so that I could embarrass myself less. I chose the latter. When I was done with the whole class, I actually felt something different. During the shower I thought to myself, would I ever come back again? Whatever occurred, I did come back, and I'm back over and over.

In SPACE every teacher's distinctive teaching style carries a different inspiration.

I will never forget that it was in Bruce's class I was able to do my first inversion ever in my life, the excitement was totally beyond words! I loved hearing his words of wisdom that always touched everyone's heart, and watching his Cirque-de-Solei demonstration was simply a divine experience.

I also enjoy Felina's passionate and attention-to-detail instruction. One time I was lucky to have an one-on-one class with her, in which I was poured by her enthusiasm and focus. Both of them taught me things specific to heal my old injuries, I am really thankful to have them as my teachers.

The more I learn about Yoga, the more amazed and thrilled I am. I am amazed to discover that the Asanas are closely related to our Mother Nature, you can just see that in their names: Tadasana (the mountain pose), Vrksasana (the tree pose), Bidalasana (the cat pose), Ustrasana (the camel pose), Bhujangasana (the cobra pose), etc., you name it. I am thrilled to learn Asanas like Surya Namaskara (the sun salutation), Matsyasana (the fish pose), Padmasana (the lotus lose), Matsyendrasana (the seated twist pose), because I can relate them to Asian arts, something I am very familiar with. When seeing or actually in these poses, suddenly I find myself transcend time and space, as if I have come to the Todaiji temple in Nara, Japan, the Seokguram Grotto in Gyeongju, Korea, or even back to China in the Yu-Lin Grotto in Shang-Xi or seeing the frescoes in the Mogao Caves in Dunhuan. The presence and the movement of these Asanas, as well as the paintings and the sculptures in these caves overwhelmingly resemble each other. As I explor deeper, the exciting discovery unveils the touching fact about their roots: they all came from the land of India. I thought Yoga was only about self-denial asterism, but it truly is the celebration of Union of the body, mind, and spirit.

In addition, learning Yoga has changed my old perception about what Yoga is. I used to think that Yoga was just another Tai-Chi like physical exercise. Far beyond my knowledge, it can also be a life style, it can be in the walk, standing, sitting, lying down in our daily life, and it is definitely in between our minds and thoughts.

Because of Yoga, my life is full of pleasant surprises.“Wow, I can do this!”Yoga has helped me to experience, to improve, and to transcend my inner self. I think this is the greatest thing that Yoga is meant to do for its practitioners.

I thank Yoga, as well as everyone here in SPACE.
