Yogi of August – Chin Chin Chang

I have practiced yoga both in the United States and Shanghai, but never before have I felt so excited to attend classes. Since I started Yoga at SPACE I feel the joy of a child when I practice.

For me, it was very important to find a teacher that I feel comfortable with. It has nothing to do with being good or bad, instead I think has to do with karmic connection. Once I found my teacher, I decided to dedicate a period of time to truly experience the teachings and to trust my teacher with my whole heart. In the beginning, my teacher was a great support and helped me to open my heart and mind. Over time the teachings have become firmly established and form the foundation for my life and the source of my inner strength.

I would like to share some thoughts about my teacher Rachel. At times she is a bit demanding, but it is to help us explore our potential. She is supportive and inspiring. She often reminds us not to compare ourselves with others but to let our own inner light shine. I particularly enjoy exploring the alignment principles in each pose. I enjoy teachers with a sense of humor who are neither to serious nor too light.

When correct alignment is taught postures can be understood step by step. All of the verbal cues help us build a solid foundation. When beginning Hot Yoga it may feel like there are very few asana practiced. Each of these postures can be explored in depth with the breath as a guide. It is said that yoga should have a big impact on our daily living. Our attitudes and habits will naturally change. It is ok if one does not come to class everyday. When I first heard that Yoga would transform our habits, I was surprised. In the beginning, I did not pay much attention to the meaning. After two months of practice, when I raised my arms, I noticed there was no strain or pain around my waist, the so called 'life saver ring', instead I felt great comfort and ease. I felt my body, mind, and breathe were all connected. I had never felt so present in my body.

I work in the interior design field. Comfort in an environment is very important for me when selecting a yoga studio. A comfortable surrounding enhance ones mood. So, SPACE was a natural choice. It is a studio with heartfelt intention. The simple design is soothing and welcoming. I cannot imagine practicing anywhere else.

Practicing yoga stabilizes my mind. It allows me to make quick and accurate judgments, and I can still be happy as a child, and enjoy laughing. I hope that everyone can find the joy of being in the present moment and wake up smiling each morning.
